White Coat Syndrome

I didn't know, until a few days ago, that there was such a thing as White Coat Syndrome.

It is a phenomenon whereby patients tend to exhibit elevated blood pressure, when they are in a clinical setting, but not otherwise.  Apparently, some people experience anxiety during a visit to the doctor.

I remembered this today, when I went for some tests, to determine why I had had a couple of blackouts during a recent kickboxing session. I wasn't really worried, because prior to the tests, my doctor had said the possible reason for those blackouts was that I had stopped suddenly and the drop in blood pressure led to a reduction in blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain.

It was reassuring though, when the practitioner conducting the test, told me that the results were fine.

But I know many people whose pressure is fine while at home, but the minute they enter the doctor's office, it is a different story and it makes you realise the effects stress can have on you.

Everyone's story is different. We all want to  be healthy, most strive to do so while others have led a life of excess and are paying the price now.

If you think about it, we could have good health, if we ate wisely and exercised regularly. Funny thing is, we all know that...how many of us practice it?

What a heavy price some of us pay due to our negligence.

  1. I think it is psychological. The mere idea of a visit to the doctor could be the cause, perhaps due to fear of what will be the outcome of the visit.
It is important to take care of oneself, because no one is the reason for your medical issues. You cause them to yourself.
